Cervical Cancer Prevention Week is an annual initiative recognised and promoted by various healthcare organisations, including the SYB Cancer Alliance, cancer charities and healthcare providers.
Its primary goal is to raise awareness about this type of cancer, encourage women to attend cervical screenings - also known as smear tests - and provide information about the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination.
Prevention Week has been observed for many years and has played a crucial role in raising awareness.
It was first established to honour the memory of Jade Goody, a well-known British reality television star who passed away from cervical cancer aged just 27. Her story highlighted the importance of early detection and prevention.
Each year, more than 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the UK. This type of cancer can affect people of all ages. It is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers if detected early enough through regular screening. The UK’s screening programme nis estimated to save 5000 lives a year.
This year, the awareness week takes place at the end January.
