Welcome to the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance Cancer Champion Programme

Three years of funding awarded to South Yorkshire Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance from Yorkshire Cancer Research to help improve health outcomes in the region

Programme Overview

SYB Cancer Alliance has launched a 3-year Cancer Champions programme across primary care in Barnsley, Bassetlaw, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

The overall ambition of the programme is to increase early diagnosis of cancer in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Primary Care Networks in a sustainable way; reducing variation and health inequalities across the region.

The ambition of the NHS England Long Term Plan aims for 75% of cancer patients to be diagnosed at Stage I or II by 2028. Our initial ambition in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) is to achieve 58% of cancer diagnosed at Stage I or II by 2023/24.

The Cancer Champions programme, which launched in July 2022, supports the wider body of work within the SYB ICB to achieve this and supports Primary Care Networks (PCNs) with the implementation of strategies and transformation projects to drive forward and sustain the delivery of the:

Primary care staff, appointed as Yorkshire Cancer Research Cancer Champions, will work across their PCNs using their local knowledge to raise awareness of and drive forward cancer prevention and early diagnosis.

They will deliver a range of activities including highlighting the importance of screening to encourage and support people making and attending appointments within the local community and raise awareness of potential cancer signs and symptoms, so people seek help and get diagnosed and treated earlier.
