Learning and Development Opportunities

Whether you're new to cancer care, developing within your current role, or looking to progress into a specialist or advanced position, there are a wide range of learning and development opportunities available to support your journey. We've split these oppertunities into four themes: National ACCEND Resources, ACCEND Funded Resources, Local SYBCA Resources and External Resources.

Please note that the resources featured on this page represent a snapshot of the learning opportunities currently available and are not intended to be an exhaustive list. New resources, courses and development opportunities become available regularly. If you're looking for additional learning opportunities, role-specific development, or support with identifying the most appropriate training for your needs, we recommend speaking with your Education Lead, Professional Lead, Practice Assessor, Line Manager, or Lead Cancer Nurse, who may be able to signpost you to further local, regional or national opportunities.

National ACCEND Resources

Official ACCEND resources, including the national framework, self-assessment tools, implementation guides and learning opportunities mapped to ACCEND.

About ACCEND programme Learn more about the ACCEND framework and how it relates to your role in cancer care. The framework is for the supportive, assistive, nursing and allied health professions workforce who provide care to people affected by cancer in general and specialist cancer settings, services and roles across the UK.
ACCEND Course Explorer The ACCEND Course Explorer has been developed to help you explore how education, training and resources align with the Aspirant Cancer Career Education and Development (ACCEND) framework
ACCEND HUB: Supportive and Assistive Toolkit Here you can find more information about the supportive and assistive level of practice including descriptions of the role profiles and the primary care cancer workforce training.
ACCEND Hub: Pre-registration toolkit This elearning toolkit supports pre-registration nursing allied health professional and pharmacy learners in developing their knowledge and confidence in cancer care.
ACCEND Hub: Registration, Enhanced and Enhanced towards Advanced (RETA) Toolkit Learners gain knowledge of the ACCEND career pathways, core capabilities in practice (CiPs), education framework, self-assessment approaches, role profiles and career development opportunities from registration to enhanced.
ACCEND Hub: Leadership, Advanced and Consultant Education (LACE) Toolkit The LACE workstream supports the development of clinical and strategic leaders working in, or aspiring to, advanced and consultant-level cancer practice. Our aim is to strengthen clinical leadership, enhance core capabilities, and support the ongoing growth of the cancer workforce.

ACCEND Funded Resources

Expand your cancer knowledge, enhance your communication skills and meet ACCEND capabilities in NHSE funded courses. Registration for the below courses starting in, September, October and February are now open for people working within NHS England

For the Supportive/Assistive Workforce:

Principles of Cancer Care

The Principles of Cancer Care Programme (PCCP) is a fully funded national 4-day course that is mapped to the ACCEND Framework. Delivered on MS Teams by Cheshire & Merseyside Cancer Alliance, for Cancer Support Workers, who are working with people that are affected by cancer or may have a potential cancer diagnosis. Please be mindful that staff must have regular direct contact and discussions with patients to be eligible.

These places are only funded for unregistered Cancer Support Workers, who must have study leave approval for the 4 consecutive days, from their manager, before securing a place.

For the Registration to Consultant Workforce:

PGCert in Cancer Care (60 credits)

Provider: UWE Bristol. On-site and Remote (Hybrid). 3 x 20 credit modules at Level 7.

  2. Evidencing Work Based Learning (EWBL)
  3. Communication skills in Supportive and End of Life Care

PGCert in Cancer Care (60 credits)

Provider: Teeside University. Fully remote. 3 x 20 credit modules at Level 7.

  1. Advanced Physical Assessment and Disease Management Skills
  2. Advancing Learning, Leadership and Improvement
  3. Principles of Integrated Practice in Cancer Care

Clinical leadership and professional development in cancer care (30 credits)

Provider: UWE Bristol.On-site and Remote (Hybrid). Standalone Level 7 module.

Professional Development and Clinical Leadership in Cancer Module (20 credits)

Provider: Birmingham City University. Remote. Standalone Level 7 module.

Local SYBCA Resources

Learning, training and development opportunities available across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, including resources developed by the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance and local partners.

SYB Shows Up Learning, education and development opportunities within psycho-social support that are aligned to the ACCEND framework.
Weston Park Cancer Centre Courses Open to staff who are involved in the care of patients undergoing treatment at Weston Park Cancer Centre, or have an interesting in improving their knowledge of Cancer Care for their patients in non-oncology areas with South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and North Derbyshire .
What Matters to You? What Matters To You? is an initiative by the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance to ensure all health professionals in our region are focused on the individual needs of each patient.
