Oesophageal cancer is one that's found anywhere in the oesophagus, sometimes called the gullet or food pipe, and symptoms can be hard to spot.
The most common symptoms of oesophageal cancer include:
- difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- unexplained weight loss
- indigestion or heartburn that doesn't go away
- pain in your throat or behind your breastbone
In the latest phase of our Peace of Mind campaign launched across social media this month, we are urging people not to leave it until it’s an emergency and to book an appointment with their doctor if they notice any symptoms that aren’t normal for them.
Nine in 10 people who show up to get cancer symptoms checked out will get the all-clear from the hospital, but an early diagnosis improves the chances of successful treatment if needed.
