More than 150 partners gathered in Sheffield for the South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance conference, Shaping the Future of Cancer Care, to share ideas, celebrate progress and explore how working together can improve cancer outcomes across the region.

The conference, held on 13 October at the OEC Conference Centre in Sheffield, brought together colleagues from across health and care, voluntary and community organisations, and people affected by cancer for a day of discussion, learning and collaboration.

With a mix of strategic insight, practical examples of transformation and meaningful conversations, the event explored how partners can work together to improve cancer care and deliver better outcomes for people across the region.

Putting the patient voice at the heart of cancer care

A key highlight was hearing from members of the People Affected by Cancer Advisory Board (PABCAB), who shared their experiences and perspectives on cancer care. Their contributions were a powerful reminder of why the voices of patients and those close to them must remain central to shaping services and influencing decisions.

The day also provided opportunities for delegates to reflect on the challenges facing cancer services, share learning from work already happening across the region, and consider how national ambitions for the future of cancer care can translate into meaningful improvements for local communities.

Sharing ideas and building on our strengths

The conference’s Wall of Strength quickly filled with ideas, challenges and examples of the incredible assets already making a difference in communities across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

From innovative approaches to care and support to the contribution of local partnerships, the wall captured the knowledge, experience and ambition within our region. It reinforced an important message: improving cancer outcomes is a shared responsibility, and we have a wealth of expertise and resources to build upon.

Through group discussions, presentations and networking, delegates explored how partnership working can help tackle inequalities, improve patient experiences and support more connected, person-centred cancer care.

Turning conversations into action

The conference marked an important opportunity to bring partners together around a shared ambition for the future. The challenge now is to build on the ideas, connections and energy generated throughout the day and turn them into action.

This work will continue to support the SYB Shows Up partnership strategy, strengthening collaboration across organisations and communities to help tackle cancer and improve outcomes for everyone across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, contributed their expertise, shared their experiences and helped make the day such a success. We are looking forward to taking the conversations forward and working together to shape the future of cancer care across our region.

Together, we can build on our strengths, turn ideas into action and make a lasting difference for people affected by cancer.
