South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard has praised the 'dedication and energy' of local businesses and employers who are coming together with health services to build more supportive workplaces for people affected by cancer.

At his offices in Sheffield, the Mayor was joined by representatives from a variety of employers to explore new ways of tackling cancer - both within local communities and inside the workplace. Attendees shared ideas and real-world examples of how organisations can stand by employees throughout their cancer journey.

Discussions highlighted the importance of practical, human-centred measures such as paid time off for tests and treatment, access to tailored physical and mental wellbeing support, and clear pathways for a positive return to work.

The Weston Park Cancer Charity and Barnsley Primary Care Cancer Champions were among those outlining their pioneering work with employers, including raising awareness of early cancer symptoms, championing the vital role of early testing, and helping businesses understand the support every employee should expect after a diagnosis, treatment and a return to work.

Experts from Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing & Research Centre offered insights into the emotional reality of cancer in the workplace, describing how treatment and recovery can trigger uncertainty, anxiety and a complex mix of emotions for employees navigating their return.

The Shows Up partnership cancer strategy - backed by the Mayor - continues to encourage workplaces across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to spark more open conversations about cancer and put employee health at the heart of organisational culture.

Its online Employer Hub provides a rich library of resources, including guidance, toolkits, case studies and inspiring personal stories from people directly affected.

Also attending the meeting were employers who have pledged to Show Up for their workforce on cancer, including Sheffield University, Premier Foods, The Curve Group, and Sheffield Chambers of Commerce. With more organisations making their pledges following the event, this takes the number of employees represented in South Yorkshire to over 37,000.

Reflecting on the roundtable meeting, the Mayor spoke of “an abundance of passionate people working to improve cancer outcomes across our region.” While acknowledging the long-term challenges ahead, he reaffirmed his commitment to a bold vision: making South Yorkshire the healthiest place in the country.
