Weston Park Cancer Charity-Cancer Information and Support-Fran Tod (Cancer Information and Support Advisor) and Emma Robinson (Cancer Information and Support Coordinator)

Fran and Emma gave a presentation on how Weston Park Cancer Charity provides cancer information and support. They discussed the Weston Park Cancer Support Centre, the practical and emotional help available and access to professional advice and emotional support also available. Fran explained that they also provide the following support to enhance wellbeing; complementary therapies, coffee mornings, diagnosis specific support groups, art therapy, ‘look good feel better’ which is a beautician led workshop, health walks and wellbeing days which run 4 times throughout the year. They then talked about the Big Purple Bus which brings their services directly into the community ensuring equal access to the services that the Weston Park Cancer Support Charity provides. Fran then gave more details on the referral pathway for cancer support and how to sign up for their newsletter and webinar.  For more details, please see their presentation which is available via the link above.

 

Targeted Lung Health Check Programme-Hannah Young

Hannah gave an overview of the Targeted Lunch Health Check Programme including how eligible patients are identified and then the process of completing the lung health check. Hannah then went on to talk about the outcomes of the programme so far including at what stage identified lung cancers have been diagnosed and the number of patients suitable for curative treatment. Hannah then went on to showcase promotional campaigns, community engagement and programme ambassadors for the TLHC programme. Michelle Ashbridge-Power BI PCN App (additional features)

Michelle made everyone aware of the staging information which is now available on the Power BI PCN App and asked if colleagues could be made aware of this additional information where appropriate.

 

Michelle Ashbridge-Celebration event

There will be a Celebration event for the Cancer Champion Programme, this is planned for March/April. Michelle shared polls asking for Cancer Champions to vote on a preferred date for this event and a preferred venue. The results of the polls will be reviewed at a later date and planning can then begin on the Celebration event.

 

Michelle Ashbridge-Year 3, Quarter 1 report and Quarter 2 deadline reminder Friday 24th January 2025

Thank you all for submitting the Year 3, Quarter 1 report. Michelle explained that we are planning to arrange meetings by place to go through the Quarter 1 report. We will be in touch with dates for these meetings in the new year. Also, please be aware that the deadline for the Quarter 2 report is Friday 24th January 2025.

 

Michelle Ashbridge-Breast and Testicular models

We are looking into sourcing breast and testicular models for those Cancer Champions who would like one for their PCN and do not have access to models already. Michelle asked that anyone who has not already voiced their interest in receiving models to get in touch with myself or Michelle so we can start looking into costings.

Michelle Ashbridge-Q1 Report-Deadline (Friday 25th October)/Support-Michelle read through the new Year 3 report and showed the Cancer Champions a completed Y3Q1 report. Michelle asked for any feedback on how Cancer Champions have found completing the new report and answered any questions or queries. Plan to organise an excel training session to assist in completing the Y3 report.

Anum Ahmed-Updates to Cancer Champion Webpage-Anum gave a brief update on the Cancer Champion webpage. Made aware that the webpage is now up to date and there is now an induction video from YCR available on the Cancer Champion website for new starts to the programme.

Michelle Ashbridge-Learning Lunch-Agenda and YHEC-Discussed attendance for the Learning Lunch planned for Thursday 21st November. We also asked for any ideas for activities during the Learning Lunch or any work that they would like to share at the Learning Lunch, asked for attendees to email us if they have any ideas.

Michelle Ashbridge-New Initiative Ideas-Michelle made Cancer Champions aware that there is some under spend in the budget from YCR which may be available to spend on a pilot initiative. Michelle asked if there were any ideas or suggestions and welcomed emails from Cancer Champions with any ideas.

Alice Patterson, Health Improvement Practitioner at the SYB Bowel Cancer Screening Programme shared a presentation with the Cancer Champions about the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. The current age range for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme is expanding over the next couple of months to people aged 50 – 74. Alice spoke about her role which focuses on providing awareness of bowel cancer screening and working closely with PCN’s to reduce the number of non-responders. 

Michelle Ashbridge mentioned about HPV uptake and if PCN managers/clinical directors would be happy utilising the Cancer Champions role to undertake targeted work for eligible females aged between 18 – 25. 

It was highlighted that the funding for the Cancer Champions in Year 3 is currently 0.1 WTE.

Anum Ahmed and Kate Macgregor spoke about the commencement of planning for the Learning Lunch.

Any Other Business

The Q1 (July - September) report deadline is on the 25th October.

A pilot mobile cervical screening unit is being rolled out on the 1st October 2024 in Doncaster. The mobile unit offers a walk-in service along with pre-booked appointments.

Cancer Champions were asked if they were happy for their comments from the Future of the YCR Cancer Champions MS Form, to be shared in the Year 2 Annual Report Paper. Thank you to everyone that was present in the meeting for agreeing to this!

Lucy Couth from YCR presented a PowerPoint showing an overview of the evaluation that YHEC have done so far and what future work they plan to do. They aim to complete another round of Stakeholder Interviews with any Cancer Champions that are willing to participate. 

Michelle Ashbridge asked if the Cancer Champions wanted another Learning Lunch and an End of Year 3 Celebration Event. Approximately 50% of those present in the meeting agreed to having another Learning Lunch and an End of Year 3 Celebration Event.

The draft Year 3 Annual Report was shared with the group and Michelle explained the information required in each section.

Barnsley Cancer Champions showcased their amazing work around regularly attending events to raise awareness of screening, cancer signs and symptoms and the importance of earlier diagnosis. 

Cancer Champions were interested to hear about any bowel screening resources that have been translated into Slovak/Roma. Farah Akhtar agreed to send through a QR code that directs you to various resources in multiple languages.

Lucy Couth from YCR made a final request to Cancer Champions, asking if they could encourage those they engage with, as well as their friends and family members, to complete the Patient/Public survey. 

Michelle Ashbridge asked if all Cancer Champions could submit their Q4 and Annual Report Reporting Templates to her by 26 July 2024. Michelle then shared her initial thoughts and a draft template for Year 3 Reporting and welcomed feedback and suggestions from Cancer Champions.

Dr Andy Holman (GP), Cancer Champion from Newgate PCN, presented on a cervical screening pilot for Polish patients where there was poor uptake. Please see Andy’s presentation attached.

Claire Casey, Head of Communications and Engagement, and Chloe Wells, Communications Officer, presented and provided an update on the timely presentation local campaign Peace of Mind and on the South Yorkshire Shows Up campaign. 

Michelle Ashbridge, IED Project Manager, mentioned the deadline is the 26th July 2024 for the Cancer Champions Reporting Template for Q4 (Apr to June) and Annual Reporting (to include all 4 Quarters for 2023/24 26 July 2024 and Year 3 Reporting Template

Ann Hetherington and Clare Longstaffe for Cavendish Cancer Care presented about the different services and support that they offer to people living with or affected by cancer. For more information please see their website - Cavendish Cancer Care (cavcare.org.uk).

Ben Brannan, Public Health Senior Practitioner, Barnsley kindly sent through a video which provided an update on the Timely Presentation Engagement work in Barnsley. 

Lucy Couth from YCR talked about the YHEC Patient and Public Survey, which is funded as part of the SY&B Cancer Champion and asked if Cancer Champions could please share the leaflet (YCR Service User Survey Study Brief with logo) with people they come into contact with through screening and engagement activities. Lucy also mentioned the Cancer Awareness Measure Survey which is undertaken annually by CRUK.

Erin Brady, Communication and Engagement lead spoke about a new campaign that will be available in March, which raises awareness on five specific cancer types across South Yorkshire. Once the resources are available a toolkit will be created and shared with all Cancer Champions.

Weston Park Cancer Charity, Faye McDool Service Development and Engagement Manager, presented about the charities services and the Big Purple Bus, which brings their services into the community. Dr Matthew Kurien, Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Gastroenterologist, presented about the work he is undertaking in the Early Detection of Colorectal cancer in Yorkshire, which is funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research. To view his presentation click here. 

Cancer Champion Achievement Mapping Alexandra Johnson has started working with the team and is supporting us to do Cancer Champion Achievement mapping, to showcase Cancer Champion work across the programme. Amy and Claire will be in touch with Cancer Champions to arrange meetings.

Training Sessions Thank you to everyone who joined the LGBTQI+ training on 18th January and the next session is on Tuesday 30th January. In February there will be a session around Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities and how to connect.

Good Things Foundation Foundation. Bryony Evans from the Good Things Foundation presented about the charity and data that is available for people for free! They have SIM cards available for businesses/organisations to order, to then provide them to people who need them. For more information click here. This is currently being trialled in Rotherham, Health Village and Dearn Valley PCN, by Myka Steeples, Cancer Champion, they are trailing this with the support of social prescribers. Damian Lewis from YHEC presented about the external evaluation they are conducting on the Yorkshire Cancer Research Cancer Champion Programme. We provided an update on the Reward and Referral scheme. 

Breast Reward and Referal is currently out with procurement, and we will share future designs. 

The next delivery of Cervical Reward and Referral assets are due in November, we will be in touch with numbers and to confirm the delivery address. 

Year 2 training programme is underway, thank you to everyone who has joined the sessions so far. We will shortly be sending out dates for upcoming training sessions. 

Health Village and Dearne Valley PCN are attending a Rotherham United Football match, where they will have a stall raising awareness of cancer screening and half a page in the programme. They have invited other cancer champions to join the event. 

Alongside this Rotherham United Community Trust have agreed to support the cancer champions in connecting with community groups and allowing us to attend sessions to raise awareness. York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) is conducting an external evaluation of the programme and asked Cancer Champions to take part. 

Katie Markham PLACE lead for Sheffield presented about Breast promotion packs that are being sent to practices and Cancer Champion 2 months prior to their Breast next test due date.

Jean Kirby and Jackie Lyons Cancer Champions from Retford and Villages PCN spoke about the use of OOH clinics to increase the uptake of Cervical Cancer Screening. Clinics are being run in the evenings and on Saturdays. From December 2022 to April 2023 there has been an 87% uptake out of 261 available appointments, with a 75% attendance rate, and 25% DNAs. Texts are being sent two days before the appointment as a reminder (using Behavioural Science techniques). All DNAs are called to understand why. (Reports are run on Ardens).

Jodie Watts Cancer Champion for Doncaster South PCN spoke about the credit card style slip she created to go inside the Cervical Reward and Referral scheme to encourage people to share the Reward and Referral on social media and to tag Doncaster South PCN or the Cancer Alliance so we can monitor how many people are sharing on social media. Practices social media are promoted in surgeries, shared on all emails, shared on personal social media, and promoted at local events. 

A poster competition was announced for the Learning Lunch in June 2023 and the opportunity to collect Bowel MOT resources to raise awareness around Bowel Screening and the age extension. Danielle Newman, Molly Abbott, Emma Bairstow, and Lyndsey Wilkinson, Cancer Champions for Barnsley spoke about how they are connecting with Health and Well-being coaches and Social Prescribers within their PCN to raise awareness around screening, signs and symptoms and preventative measures, to view the presentation they delivered to Social Prescribers and Health and Wellbeing coaches click here.

Emma Bairstow shared some photos from a fundraising event she did in practice to raise money for CRUK. She raised a whopping £180 by doing a bake sale and a tombola. Emma got the tombolo prices by visiting local shops.

Luke Rollin from NHS England joined the session to talk about a Cervical Cancer screening survey he is looking to develop, in order to understand the current barriers people face around attending cervical screening. 

Danielle Cooper Cancer Champion from Health Village and Dearne Valley PCN, spoke about the work she has done around the IIF guidelines and FIT testing. It was identified that coding for FIT testing where not being coded or where coded incorrectly. Work was done to amend this and training was provided to practice staff. Danielle also spoke about the work she is doing to start outreach events, the implementation of a third letter to follow up with Cervical non-responders, and the work she is doing with the Digital Transformation Lead to tackle Health Inequalities. 

Lucy Neale Cancer Champion from Doncaster North spoke about the work she has been doing for Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. A Q&A session was held in practice around cervical screening and clinic slots were available on the day. A trial drop-in clinic is also being held this week to see if this can be rolled out across the PCN on a frequent basis. A coffee morning was held at a local Cafe to raise awareness and one of the main barriers identified was women didn't want to call the practice to book in. Some practices within the PCN are trialling a self-book process and monitoring the success. 

An update was provided around the Reward and Referral around numbers to be expected upon delivery and the assets are to be delivered to all practices within the PCN. An information sheet around the scheme will also be provided for practice. To view the information sheet Click here.
